A VERY INTERESTING PISTOL GRIP SEMI-DELUXE 86 WINCHESTER INDIAN RIFLE
Plaque on the side of the stock says "Presented to Chief High Bear Indian Congress Omaha Nebraska 1898" . The inscription is definitely old, evident by the way it was put on the gun. Leaves very little doubt in my mind that it is 100% correct. Other Indian motifs on the gun look correct as well. A couple of silver badges on each side and about a dozen tacks. On the forearm, what looks like a turtle motif of some sort. Accompanying the gun is quite a bit of paperwork. Chief High Bear was from the Standing Rock delegation to the Washington D.C. inquiries way back about 1888. They were investigating the goings on of the various Indian tribes. Lots of paperwork mentioning Chief High Bear and several newspaper articles. An early picture of Chief High Bear. Also comes with Factory Letter stating all features of the gun as well as a dated photo 1894 Brooklyn New York. Buffalo Bill was attending High Bear's wedding to Holy Blanket. Gun shows a fair amount of use. Wood has been lightly refinished. Slightly undersized. No splits or cracks. A fair amount of checkering still remaining. Set trigger. Original 26" full oct bbl and full length mag. Cal 38-56. Original sights. Fairly decent metal turning a plum brown coloration. Nice looking gun. Guaranteed to be correct. The inscription on the side of the gun leaves little doubt that it was done a long time ago. Fairly crudely inlaid but the way that it would be.
