Original dovetail-jointed crate with the older-style Winchester logo. Measures 10 x 10-1/2 x 45-3/4. Heavy marking pressed into the wood on both ends show the contents. Interestingly, one end has the markings upside down compared to the other end. Missing the top and internal gun dividers. Partial hinges remain where the top was attached at one time. Caliber 44-40. 24" full round bbl, button mag, mint bore, orig sights include Lyman front and Model 21 series receiver mounted rear with a filler blank in the bbl dovetail. Orig wood is in near exc cond with some minor oil soaking but still retains 75% of the orig varnish; rifle style buttplate which has traces of case color showing. Overall metal is exc with 98% bright bbl blue, 75-80% bright receiver blue; just some minor flaking on the right hand side-the other side retains virtually all the blue, the bottom has 90% of the blue. Caliber 25-20. Orig 24" full oct bbl, full length magazine tube, orig wood is exc+ with a rifle style buttplate. Overall gun is very elaborately engraved with a couple bbl bands at the muzzle and 4-5 bbl bands back by the the receiver. The receiver itself is outlined in gold and platinum with four fairly large animal inlays which are done in gold. The wood is in beautiful cond with very elaborate checkering and carving; buttplate is even very heavily engraved and gold inlaid. Orig wood shows a fair amount of hunting use, mars and dings but no splits or cracks; still retains a considerable amount of varnish. Orig finish has turned a plum brown patina coloration. Orig 20" full oct bbl, full length magazine, orig sights, exc bore. Orig deluxe checkered fancy straight stock wood is in exc cond with carbine style buttplate and correct short style forearm. Overall gun retains nearly all of the orig blue, shows very little signs of use. I believe this is one of the guns that was made up for the MGM movie company in the 30's; it has all the configurations of that grouping of firearms. They have appeared in a number of variations-almost all were 20" short rifles. This one has probably some of the most unique features I've seen and I think it is the most desirable. Very attractive. 24" round barrel, full magazine. Shows quite a bit of use and character, but overall nice colors and not a lot of dings. Lower tang and wrist repaired -- very solid. Barrel is a pleasing plum-blue color. Receiver is also plum-blue, turning silver. Just below the 455XXX serial number is a secondary stamp "9397," also a small importer's mark on barrel in front of fore end. This gun is in high condition with perhaps 90% blue on the receiver which is turning a little bit at the carry point, bbl retains 90-95% blue with one slightly cleaned area right in front of the rear sight. Wood also is in VG cond; full fitting, no cracks, no losses. Somewhat early gun in the 252,XXX serial number range. Bore on this 44 Cal is excellent! Strong case colors on hammer and lever. (6969-14-255) MODEL 1892 WINCHESTER RIFLE IN 25-20

This gun is a fixer up special. It does have the good parts: full oct bbl, full length mag, reasonably nice metal, some bluing on the bbl and mag tube-the remainder is an old looking antique brownish color. The receiver has mostly toned to a medium brown patina; not bad looking. Here's where the problem starts: there's a few pieces missing such as the loading gate, it has replacement sights and the comb has been modifled on the buttstock and it is a carbine style buttplate. The forearm is in reasonably good cond with a lot of dings, scrapes, scratches, etc and one slight little chip missing toward the forearm cap. A good plus on this gun is that the action is quite nice; another minus is that the bore is rather dark and could use a good cleaning, maybe it would come out better than it looks right now. 20" full oct bbl, full length magazine tube. This is of a carbine configuration and is one of a grouping of guns that were made up for the MGM movie studios back in the 30's. They were made up out of take-down 24" rifle bbls and shortened to 20". They had trapper forearms, carbine butts, saddlerings, oct bbls. Very interesting little gun; this is probably one of the better ones I've seen with 95% bbl and mag blue; 50-60% real clean receiver blue toning to a plumish coloration, orig sights, mint bore in 44WCF. ~~> VIEW PHOTO <~~ e

(4720-13-219) CONSECUTIVELY SERIAL NUMBERED PAIR OF WINCHESTER 1892 RIFLES IN .44 WCF

Ordered by the British War Department around 1916 for use as Home Guard guns. The rack numbers on the stock are also consecutive: ‘GB 356’ and ‘GB 357’. They both have a RBFM and fine bores. Both guns retain considerable blue on the barrels and magazines; receivers have traces of finish remaining. Most original varnish remains on solid walnut.
