Winchester 1885

The Model 1885 was Winchester's first single shot rifle. It was available in two frame sizes, commonly called "Low Wall" and "High Wall." The small Low Wall frame was primarily used for smaller caliber ammunition, and the larger High Wall frame was primarily for larger calibers. The Model 1885 was considered the hot rod rifle of its day. Every serious shooter had a different secret formula that he thought would give him an edge over the competition, resulting in hundreds of variations for the collector today. It was available in 5 different weights of barrel, marked 1 thru 5 on the underside of the barrel, just forward of the forearm. One popular variation of the Winchester '85 is a 22 caliber musket, which was a military training rifle, known as the Winder Musket.

Original 3X grade pistol grip checkered Schuetzen style stock is in excellent condition with most orig lacquer intact, helm buttplate and Dutch pattern cheekpiece. Overall gun is exc with 98% orig bbl blue, 75-80% bright vivid case colors. The Schuetzen rifles with a case colored frame are really quite unusual, they're generally later guns than that; complete with Factory Letter of Authenticity which states, 'no rear sight seat' but this has got a sight dovetail for a rear sight-probably an oversight or somebody put it in at a later time. If that's the case, they did a perfect job. Formerly in the Eldon Owens collection.

Matching wood on the two forearms and buttstock are in exc cond with a very few light handling mars; complete with correct shotgun style buttplate. Receiver finish is probably about 75% with some flaking and toning on one side but still crisp and sharp with no signs of pits. Overall metal is near exc with 95% orig bbl blue and probably 40% orig thinning case colors. Nice, clean, sharp little gun; should make a good shooter in a very desirable, hard to find caliber.

INTERESTING 1885 LOW WALL WINCHESTER FACTORY TEST RIFLE

Item # 5166-19-40

Used as an ammunition testing rifle at the factory. 22 SHORT caliber, 23-1/2 round #1 barrel is hand-stamped "3-19-38." Of course bore has seen a lot of use, but it is still bright. No provisions for a forearm, has marks on stock and metal consistent with being clamped down to a bench. 90% blue on left side of frame, right side is 75% blue with wear marks, barrel has 80% blue with localized wear patterns. Rifle buttplate. Would make an interesting display piece for the low wall or ammo collector. Factory letter states it was shipped in 1901, then repaired and returned in 1908, 1909 and 1910.
